Nicholas Adam Coppage, 35 of Easton, was arrested on August 28, 2015 after being stopped by a Maryland State Trooper for traffic violations in Queen Anne’s County. The Trooper immediately detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from Coppage’s breath and observed his eyes to be glassy and bloodshot. As Coppage spoke, the Trooper detected that his speech was slurred and lethargic. Coppage displayed further signs of impairment following a series of field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. Mr. Coppage refused to submit to a chemical test to determine his breath alcohol concentration (BAC). Further investigation revealed that Coppage’s license to drive was suspended and revoked.
Records from the Motor Vehicle Administration showed that Mr. Coppage’s license was suspended in 2008 and revoked in 2009. The records also showed that he had previously been convicted of Driving While Under the Influence in 1999, 2006 and 2009. Coppage had also been convicted in 2001 and twice in 2008 for driving on a suspended license.
On March 25, 2016 Mr. Coppage was convicted in the Queen Anne’s County Circuit Court of Driving While Impaired as a subsequent offender. Sentencing was held on September 9, 2016 at which time Coppage was sentenced to serve three years in the Division of Corrections.
This case was prosecuted by Deputy State’s Attorney Michael Cuches.
