Valerie Jean Williams, former General Manager at Beach Harbor Campground, located in Grasonville, Maryland, was sentenced to 5 years in prison in the Queen Anne’s County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to embezzlement. The Judge suspended 4 years of the sentence and Williams will serve one year of incarceration at the Queen Anne’s County Detention Center. Upon her release from jail, she will be placed on 5 years probation and was also ordered to pay restitution to Beach Harbor.
During the early part of October, 2014 members of the Beach Harbor Board of Directors discovered that Williams had made roughly $30,000 in unauthorized credit card transactions utilizing Beach Harbor credit cards.
A joint investigation between the Queen Anne’s County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office revealed during the period of March 2013 through September 2014 Valerie Williams made in excess of 100, unauthorized, credit card transactions utilizing Beach Harbor credit cards. These transactions were linked directly to the personal use of Williams and to a business that Williams was operating, Sun and Surf Travel. Authorities also examined the banking records of Williams and determined that Williams had stolen funds from Beach Harbor checking accounts as well. Some of this stolen money was linked directly to the personal banking records of Williams and Sun and Surf Travel. The State’s Attorney’s Office subsequently charged Williams with embezzlement after determining that she had stolen in excess of $62,000.
Williams has a prior criminal record in which she was charged by the Federal Government for theft, convicted and served jail time. In addition, Williams has convictions for passing bad checks.
State’s Attorney Lance Richardson prosecuted this case.
